The ARENA DI VERONA Opera Festival reaches its 102th edition, attracting, since the first 'AIDA' in 1913, spectators from all over the world.
A great cultural and economic resource for the city of Verona, and beyond, which this year offers a truly extensive and high-quality program.
The undisputed protagonist of every Veronese summer, the Arena di Verona Opera Festival attracts millions of tourists and opera lovers from all over the world to Verona, hosting the greatest opera talents. Its origin dates back to 1913, on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi, thanks to the initiative of the Veronese tenor Giovanni Zenatello. He, to celebrate the anniversary, decides to set up a great event in the Arena, staging the most spectacular of Verdi's Operas: Aida, made even more grandiose by the magnificence of the spaces of the Roman amphitheater dating back to the first century AD.
Thus, on August 10, 1913, the largest open-air opera season in the world was born. Among the audience there are Americans, Argentines, Russians, Germans and also many celebrities, such as Giacomo Puccini, Arrigo Boito, Pietro Mascagni and Franz Kafka .
Aida is staged and the success is absolute, thanks also to the innovative scenographic choice, with three-dimensional elements and no longer only with the painted panels of traditional theatres.
The newspaper L'Arena headline: "Great triumph of Aida, in the Roman amphitheater of Verona, consecrated by the delirious enthusiasm of a cosmopolitan crowd."
Since 1936, the performances have been managed by the Ente Autonomo Spettacoli Lirici Arena di Verona (today Fondazione Arena di Verona), and they only stopped during the period of the two world wars, for about ten years.
The 2020 edition, due to the Covid-19 epidemic, was postponed to the following year, and replaced with a series of concerts and galas.
The 102th Opera Festival will take place from 8 June to 7 September with 46 unmissable evenings, in which 6 Opera titles will alternate 5 Gala evenings. The inauguration is entrusted to the new production of TURANDOT in homage to the great Giacomo Puccini, in the wonderful staging by Zeffirelli, combining the most loved Opera stagings, with great interpreters of the international Opera scene.
